The First Tubeless Hybrid Closed-Loop System!
The FDA has just approved Insulet’s newest product, Omnipod 5. Omnipod 5 is the first and only advanced insulin delivery product that is tubeless and has its own smartphone app. There are 3 main parts to this, the first being an insulin delivery pod that is tubeless, the Dexcom G6 CGM (continuous glucose monitor), and a smartphone app.
Unique Features
This product has a new feature, SmartAdjust technology. This element delivers micro-boluses every five minutes and is a feature not available in competitor pumps. Insulin will either be increased, decreased, or suspended based on the target blood glucose level.
Another characteristic is that it allows for five different blood sugar targets to be set and to be adjusted for different times throughout the day. The target blood sugars are 110 mg/dl to 150 mg/dl and can be adjusted by 10 mg/dl.
There are two modes available for the system. The first is auto mode which requires connection with Dexcom. Auto mode will still work even if the users phone dies or if it is out of Bluetooth range. The second mode is manual mode; it does not require Dexcom connection and delivers insulin at rates that are already pre-programmed.
A new activity feature allows users to set their target blood sugar to 150 mg/dl and to temporarily suspend insulin delivery. This feature is great for users who exercise or participate in athletics.
The App
The app is available on an Insulet monitoring device or a compatible android smartphone. An app compatible for iPhone is currently in development. The app allows for basal and bolus controls, a bolus calculator that gathers blood glucose values and trends provided via CGM, primary data display, wireless uploading of pump and CGM data, and starting the activity feature.
The Future of Omnipod 5
Insulet is currently working on plans for compatibility with Dexcom G7 as well as Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3.
