Grunberger Diabetes Institute and the Bigfoot Unity Program
What’s the Bigfoot Unity Program?
Grunberger Diabetes Institute is one of the first clinics in the world partnering with Bigfoot Biomedical to allow our patients to become part of this exciting program. It is designed for all who inject BOTH long- and meal-time insulins.
The Bigfoot Unity Program includes the Bigfoot Unity System, the first-of-its-kind smart insulin pen caps that incorporate integrated continuous glucose monitor (iCGM) data and your doctor’s instructions for insulin dose recommendations. The System displays dosing recommendations and glucose readings from the iCGM sensor right on connected smart caps for your insulin pens.
It integrates with the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor that provides the System with hypoglycemia alerts in real time. It supports all major brands of both long-acting and rapid-acting disposable insulin pens.
It is delivered to your home as bundled subscription, with no upfront costs.
The White Cap is the heart of the system. It displays your dose recommendations for rapid-acting insulin. Its screen displays information for your dosing decisions. The White Cap allows you to scan the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor to view your current glucose and a trend arrow.
The Black Cap is where you can view your dose recommendations for long-acting insulin. With a click of a button, its screen displays the time since your last recorded dose. With another click, it displays the recommended long-acting insulin dose amount. The Black Cap works with the Bigfoot Unity Mobile App to help you take your long-acting insulin dose consistently by sending you potential missed dose alerts. The system automatically captures and sends your dosing time data for review.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor automatically monitors glucose and provides the System with hypoglycemia alerts in real time. You simply tap the White Cap on the sensor to capture current glucose data. Through the app, the sensor also connects to your iPhone, displaying your current glucose range and a detailed glucose history.
If you prefer to use fingerstick tests, if your symptoms don’t match the CGM reading, or when indicated by the System, the included glucose meter can be used as an input to the dose recommendations. The data from the meter are automatically captured and shared with the System. Your blood glucose value is displayed on your White Pen Cap, and stored with all your glucose readings in the app.
The app is where you input and can review your doctor’s dose recommendations. The app provides display of your current glucose ranges and real-time alerts. It automatically collects data from the rest of the components and generates graphs of your glucose and insulin dose time history.
Bigfoot bundles together hardware and software components needed to support your insulin therapy. You will receive a welcome kit containing Bigfoot’s smart pen caps for long-acting and rapid-acting insulins, two FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors, pen needles, a backup blood glucose meter and supplies.
Part of the Bigfoot Unity Program includes ongoing, remote care from your health care team. The System makes this simple for you by collecting data in the background, without any work on your part. The data are automatically available to your clinician through a secure, online portal.
You, of course, always remain in control of day-to-day management of your diabetes. The remote care, that the system enables, never automatically administers insulin.
