FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus is Now Available!

Those among you who follow the field of diabetes technology know that the Freestyle Libre CGM sensors were not originally approved for integration with insulin pumps. That changed on March 6, 2023 when the FDA cleared FreeStyle Libre 2 and FreeStyle Libre 3 integrated continuous glucose monitoring (iCGM) system sensors for integration with automated insulin delivery (AID) systems after Abbott modified the sensors to enable integration with AID systems

It took a while before these new sensors reached our patients but we are finally here with the first offering: the new, 15-day sensor, FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus integrated with the t:slim X2 Tandem insulin pump. The sensor connects wirelessly to the pump and automatically sends it glucose readings every minute. You can see your glucose data on the pump and in the t:connect app. The t:slim X2 pump with Control-IQ technology predicts glucose levels 30 minutes into the future and adjusts insulin delivery every five minutes based on CGM readings and delivers automatic correction boluses (up to one per hour) to help prevent hyperglycemia.

The next steps include integration of the pumps with FreeStyle Libre 3 as well as smart pen – sensor integration. Stay tuned!
